Not All Who Wander are Lost... No Really, We Probably Aren't Lost.

One of the things that Venturing Crew 190 likes to do is get outside! Central Pennsylvania holds almost endless opportunities to do this from hiking the Applachian Trail, to kayaking down our scenic waterways. Orienteering is a little-known way to experience nature in our own backyard while learning teamwork and new skills.

In April, we planned on doing a orienteering course in Colonel Denning State Park located just north of Newville, PA. There are three different orienteering courses of various difficulty and maps are readily available.

What is orienteering? Well before the advent of GPS on our phones, we used other forms of navigation like using a compass. Armed with nothing more than a magnetic stick in water and some drawings on a piece of paper, otherwise known as a map, we braved the countryside to locate our waypoints. We had to use our "pace" to know about how far we've travelled, and our compass to ensure we were going in the right direction too.

If you like getting outside, but might not want to mindlessly walk a hiking trail, try orienteering! It's a great way to use your brain, some old-fashioned tools, and your time to enjoy the outdoors in new ways.
